about

Pretty Promises was written as a duet. Wasp Summer recorded two versions, one as a duet with Norwegian-American musician Mark Steiner and one with Samantha singing alone. The track was left off the final version of the 'Close as a Slow Dance' album (A Headful of Bees, 2012) but is released here as an exclusive free download to new mailing list members.

lyrics

Verse 1:
I make you strong, sweet coffee
You give me strong, sweet kisses, oh.
Your legs tucked under a borrowed shirt, in my kitchen oh
Dirty blonde light shows the marks I left on your skin oh
But I can't let you in
No, I can't let you further in

Bridge:
We're less than together
Closer than friends, I guess
Uncertain jumpers on the precipice

Chorus:
Your eyes make pretty promises
That I can't stand by in the day
When you turn your softest eyes on me
Stop it now, I don't want to feel that ache

Verse 2:
We talk about everything
We talk about everything but love
Your sandy head between my breasts. I kiss your forehead oh
And deep in the night, we reach for each other's skin
But I can't let you in
No, I can't let you further in

Bridge:
We're less than together
Closer than lovers, I guess
Uncertain jumpers out on the precipice
Whatever you think you see in my eyes
Don't mention it, please?

Chorus:
Your eyes make pretty promises
That I can't stand by in the day
When you turn your softest eyes on me
Stop it now, I don't want to feel that ache
